A step through the door of Shangri-La Exotic Home Decor reveals a treasure trove of one-of-a-kind Asian furniture and home accessories.
SHANGRI-LA Exotic Home Decor was extablished in 2001 in Edmonton (Canada) by Norideen Kitchell and Alex Ngai after they found very little selection in unique decorating accessories nor the rich solid wood furniture they so often see when they were living in Southeast Asia. 'Most businesses here buy from the wholesalers instead of importing directly and they are all selling more or less the same things.' said Kitchell. 'The chain stores may import themselves but it is in bulk and there is no uniqueness whatsoever in their products.'
Shangri-La Exotic Home Decor import most of their products directly from Asia - from hand-crafted solid mahogany furniture from Indonesia and decorating accessories from Thailand. They have just started bringing in Chinese (Qing Dynasty) antiques and Tibetan furniture.
Manager Alex Ngai does the buying and makes regular trips to Asia looking for unusual products. 'I go directly to the sources and handpick every item.' said Alex. 'I don't want mass produced products from the big factories and because we cut out all the middle men, we're able to keep our prices low.'
Shangri-La opened a westend location at 17034 - 90th Avenue in Edmonton in October 2005. Customers should visit both stores as the two locations each carry some exclusive pieces.
